Women in Logistics: Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

The logistics industry has long been perceived as a male-dominated field. However, recent trends indicate a significant shift towards greater gender diversity and inclusion. Initiatives like the Women in Logistics (WiL) UK conference, held in May 2025 at Jungheinrich, Warrington exemplify this transformation. The event provided a platform for networking, sharing ideas, and advancing the mission of supporting women in logistics.

At Simarco, we are committed to empowering our women and ensuring equal opportunities for all. As part of our dedication to fostering diversity, Team Simarco attended this year’s Women in Logistics Conference, where we connected with like-minded professionals, learned from industry leaders, and explored key topics related to the future of logistics. We left the event inspired, motivated, and more committed than ever to driving forward the change that is so crucial for the future of our industry.

Key Trends Shaping the Future of Women in Logistics:

1.Women-Led Initiatives and Networks on the Rise

Across the logistics industry, we’re seeing a surge in women-led initiatives and professional networks that are creating space for women to lead, collaborate, and influence change. Groups like Women in Logistics UK, WISE (Women in Science and Engineering), and global initiatives such as Women in Supply Chain are actively driving mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and advocacy. These networks are empowering women to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and challenge outdated perceptions within the sector.

2.Embracing Technology and Automation

The integration of technology and automation in logistics is creating new opportunities for women. Roles in data analytics, AI-driven supply chain management, and robotics are becoming more prevalent. These positions often require strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, areas where women are excelling. The reduction of physical demands through automation also makes these roles more accessible to a diverse workforce.

    3.Flexible Work Arrangements

To retain female talent, logistics companies are adopting flexible work policies. Hybrid work models, job-sharing arrangements, and remote work options are being implemented to accommodate work-life balance needs. Such flexibility is crucial in retaining women, especially those in mid-career stages, and ensuring their continued contribution to the industry.

4.Addressing Pay Gaps and Career Advancement

Despite progress, challenges remain regarding pay equity and career advancement opportunities for women. Studies indicate that women in logistics often earn less than their male counterparts and face barriers to reaching senior leadership positions. Companies are now focusing on transparent pay structures, promoting women into leadership roles, and providing clear career progression pathways to address these disparities.

        Conclusion:

The logistics industry is undergoing a transformation, with women playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping its future. Through initiatives like the WiL UK conference, mentorship programs, technological advancements, and flexible work policies, the sector is breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive environment. While challenges persist, the collective efforts of organisations and individuals are paving the way for a more diverse and equitable logistics industry.

AI and Digital Tech Transform UK Logistics in 2025

If your recent deliveries have felt faster, more accurate, and more sustainable, you’re witnessing a quiet revolution taking place behind the scenes. Across the UK, the logistics sector is embracing digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) at an unprecedented pace, changing how goods are moved, tracked and delivered.

In 2025, smart technologies are no longer on the horizon; they are fully embedded in daily operations, from autonomous delivery vans in city centres to predictive systems that help retailers avoid shortages. The digital shift is reshaping an industry that once relied heavily on paper trails and manual processes.

        Smarter Deliveries with AI

AI is now playing a central role in how deliveries are planned and executed. From route planning to traffic forecasting, intelligent systems help logistics providers make faster, more informed decisions. Deliveries are not only quicker, but also more reliable, with fewer delays and better use of vehicles and fuel.

Self-driving delivery vehicles and automated systems are already being used in select areas across the UK, especially for short-distance or last-mile deliveries. These autonomous technologies are reducing reliance on manual labour and lowering costs, while also offering new ways to serve hard-to-reach areas.

Here at Simarco, telematics, a blend of telecommunications and informatics, is proving to be a game-changer. By providing real-time insights into vehicle performance, driving behaviour, fuel consumption, and route efficiency, telematics helps our HGV drivers and fleet managers make smarter choices that lead to lower emissions and more efficient operations.

        Automation in the Warehouse

Warehouses and distribution centres have also seen a digital overhaul. Manual tasks like sorting, packing, and inventory checks are increasingly handled by robots, while AI software monitors and manages stock in real time.

Digital simulations, known as digital twins, allow logistics managers to test different scenarios, such as demand surges or supply chain disruptions, without affecting operations. This makes it easier to prepare for unexpected events and to find new efficiencies.

Steve Pyne, Head of UK and European Warehousing at Simarco, said: “At Simarco, we are embracing automation to streamline our warehouse operations, reduce manual tasks, and enhance accuracy, not to replace people, but to continually improve the efficiency, precision, and service we offer our customers.

This includes everything from simple barcode scanning to fully integrated systems like WMS, ERP, and TMS. Using advanced tools like SnapFulfil WMS, we’re able to connect systems both internally and directly with our customers, giving them real-time visibility and control over their inventory and orders from receipt through to delivery.

By combining automation with smart integration, we’re working smarter and ensuring our operations remain agile, transparent, and aligned with our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Ultimately, it’s about delivering greater value and helping our customers thrive in a fast-moving industry.”

        Tracking Everything in Real Time

One of the most noticeable changes is the increased visibility across the supply chain. Thanks to connected systems and real-time data sharing, logistics teams can track goods at every stage of their journey. At Simarco, we utilise a system called Truckcom, which provides comprehensive transport management capabilities, giving us full visibility and control over our operations.

Predictive analytics can now identify potential problems before they cause disruptions, such as weather delays, customs issues, or stock shortages. This makes it possible to reroute shipments, adjust delivery times, or communicate clearly with customers, all in real time. Truckcom plays a key role in this by streamlining communication, tracking, and logistics management, helping us ensure timely and accurate delivery.

Real-time emissions tracking has also become a priority. This deeper level of transparency not only enhances reporting accuracy but also gives customers faster, clearer insights into the carbon footprint of their shipments. With Truckcom, we can efficiently manage emissions data, ensuring that our environmental impact is continuously monitored and reported.

        Pushing Toward Greener Logistics

Sustainability is a core focus at Simarco, and we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact. We provide extensive carbon emissions reporting and data, supported by our use of Truckcom, a transport management system that enhances real-time tracking and predictive analytics. This allows us to optimise routes, address potential disruptions, and improve efficiency.

We’re also focused on reducing emissions and fuel consumption across the UK’s logistics network. This includes using HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in our fleet to cut CO₂ emissions by up to 90%. Additionally, we’re exploring new packaging technologies to reduce waste, especially for temperature-sensitive goods like food and medicine.

To further our green efforts, we’re collaborating with organisations like the United Nations Global Compact and Ecologi, actively investing in climate-positive projects, and offsetting our carbon emissions through tree planting and sustainability initiatives.

        Challenges to Overcome

Despite the progress, the path to full digital transformation isn’t without its challenges. Many smaller operators still face barriers such as high upfront costs, limited access to digital infrastructure, and a shortage of skilled workers in areas like AI and data analytics.

Regulation is also playing catch-up, particularly when it comes to newer technologies like autonomous vehicles and drone deliveries. Current rules limit where and how these tools can be used, meaning innovation often moves faster than policy.

        What’s Next for UK Logistics

Even with these hurdles, 2025 marks a major shift in how the logistics industry operates in the UK. With growing government support for automation, innovation, and sustainability, the sector is moving towards a more connected and intelligent future.

For businesses and consumers, that means greater reliability, better service, and a logistics network that’s more prepared for the challenges of a changing world.

Managing Director, Trevor Scott, said, “The speed of change should be embraced however we also need to be realistic on the time frames expected when implementing new technology. Before AI can be fully deployed your business needs to adopt and deploy an automation strategy which lays the foundations for full AI rollout.”

Driving Sustainability Forward: How Data-Driven Decisions Are Powering Simarco’s Emissions Tracking

In 2025, a powerful shift is underway in the logistics sector: data-driven decision-making is reshaping how companies track and manage their environmental impact. As the logistics sector evolves, the pressure to meet tougher sustainability standards and reduce emissions has never been greater.

Why Emissions Tracking Matters More Than Ever

The global movement toward net-zero emissions is putting a spotlight on logistics, a sector responsible for a significant portion of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. Today, customers, regulators, and investors are no longer satisfied with companies simply ‘monitoring’ their emissions. They expect real, measurable action to drive down carbon footprints.

At Simarco International, sustainability is more than just a buzzword it’s a commitment. We are actively working to cut our environmental impact by embracing cleaner alternatives like Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, reducing energy use across facilities, and investing in cutting-edge telematics technology.
Telematics, a blend of telecommunications and informatics is proving to be a game-changer. By providing real-time insights into vehicle performance, driving behaviour, fuel consumption, and route efficiency, telematics helps HGV drivers and fleet managers make smarter choices that lead to lower emissions and more efficient operations.

And it doesn’t stop there: through the Simarco customer portal, clients can now track their own CO2 emissions using an integrated carbon calculator. This empowers businesses to make better-informed, greener decisions about their shipments. A win-win for everyone.

Making Emissions Reporting Easier for Everyone

For many logistics companies, particularly smaller ones, emissions reporting has long been a complicated, time-consuming process. Thankfully, that’s starting to change.

Logistics UK has stepped in with its new Emissions Reporting for Transport service, providing members with simple, accurate carbon emissions data. This new tool is helping businesses of all sizes stay compliant with environmental regulations while clearly demonstrating their green credentials to customers and partners.

As an added advantage, because we own our own fleet and assets, we can go even further, offering live, real-time emissions tracking. This deeper level of transparency not only enhances our reporting accuracy but also gives customers faster, clearer insights into the carbon footprint of their shipments.

The Rising Focus on Scope 3 Emissions

While direct emissions are becoming easier to manage, indirect emissions, known as Scope 3 emissions, remain a tougher challenge. These emissions, which occur across a company’s supply chain, are now a key focus for businesses determined to meet ambitious environmental goals.

Thanks to emerging technologies like blockchain, IoT sensors, and advanced analytics, gathering emissions data across complex supply chains is becoming more feasible. These innovations are providing the critical visibility companies need to fully understand and reduce their environmental impact.

Looking Ahead: A Smarter, Greener Future

At Simarco, the journey toward a greener future has been well underway since early 2022. We have already earned several impressive accreditations, including:

        • Ecology – Climate Positive Workforce
        • Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) – Approved targets aligned with 1.5°C goals
        • Memberships in the UN Global Compact and local Net-Zero Policy Groups (Essex Chamber of Commerce, Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, BIFA Sustainability Policy Group)
        • Ecovadis Bronze Award for sustainability performance

The message is clear: data-driven emissions tracking isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s becoming essential for companies that want to succeed both environmentally and economically.

Businesses that invest in smarter, more transparent emissions management today are setting themselves up for a more resilient, responsible, and profitable future.

DAP vs DDP: Key Shipping Terms Explained for Smoother International Trade

When it comes to international shipping, a little clarity can go a long way. If you’ve ever wondered what the real difference is between DAP and DDP and why it matters, you’re in the right place!

DAP vs DDP: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

When it comes to international shipping, understanding Incoterms is essential to ensure smooth operations and avoid costly misunderstandings. Two commonly used Incoterms are DAP (Delivered at Place) and DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) but what exactly do they mean, and how do they differ?
        Let’s break it down.

What Is DAP (Delivered at Place)?

DAP means the seller is responsible for delivering the goods to a named destination, typically the buyer’s premises or another agreed location in the buyer’s country. The seller takes care of all costs and risks involved in transporting the goods right up to the delivery point but not including import clearance or duties.

        Key Points:

        • The seller pays for transportation to the agreed location.
        • The buyer is responsible for import duties, taxes, and customs clearance.
        • Risk transfers from seller to buyer once goods are delivered to the destination.

        Example:

If Simarco is shipping a pallet of electronics from the UK to a customer in Germany under DAP terms, we arrange the transport and ensure the goods arrive safely at the buyer’s warehouse. However, the German customer is responsible for clearing the goods through customs and paying any applicable import taxes.
What Is DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)?

DDP goes one step further. The seller not only delivers the goods to the destination but also handles all customs formalities, import duties, and taxes in the buyer’s country.

        Key Points:

        • The seller assumes all costs and responsibilities, including customs clearance and payment of duties.
        • The buyer simply receives the goods hassle-free.
        • Risk transfers to the buyer only after delivery and customs clearance.

        Example:

Suppose a Simarco client requests a full-service solution. Shipping under DDP terms means we would manage the entire process from origin to destination including paying customs duties in the destination country. The client doesn’t need to worry about any border formalities.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

        Choose DAP if:

        • The buyer prefers to manage import clearance and has in-house customs expertise.
        • The seller wants to avoid dealing with foreign tax systems or regulations.

        Choose DDP if:

        • The buyer wants a fully managed, door-to-door delivery experience.
        • The seller is confident navigating the import regulations in the buyer’s country.

DAP vs DDP: Which Should You Choose?

At Simarco, we work closely with clients to select the best Incoterm for their needs. Whether you’re managing your own customs clearance under DAP or want a complete logistics solution with DDP, we tailor our services to ensure a seamless experience.

Need advice on which Incoterm works best for your shipment?

Apprenticeship Spotlight: Keir Joins Simarco’s Witham Transport Team

A big welcome to Keir, who’s joined our fast-paced Transport team in Witham as our latest Apprentice!

Join us as we hear about his journey so far…

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I’m 19 and a huge football fan, especially when it comes to my local team, Braintree Town, I haven’t missed a single game this season, even across the 7,000 miles we’ve travelled! In my previous role, I worked as a general manager for a pizza chain, where I developed strong leadership skills and really came to understand the importance of teamwork and staying motivated.

What made you interested in a career in transport?

I’ve always been drawn to a career in transport, ever since I was a kid. Growing up, I spent a lot of time traveling around Europe, and I was always fascinated by the different trucks and trailers on the road. I used to think, “One day, I want to do something like that.” So, in a way, I always knew I’d end up in this industry.

What does a typical day look like for you so far?

A typical day for me starts with coming in and saying hello to everyone, then checking any emails that came in overnight. I usually take a few minutes to recap anything I learned the day before, just to keep it fresh. After that, I like to get stuck in and help wherever I can.

What have you enjoyed most about the role so far?

So far, I’ve really enjoyed getting to know my new colleagues and learning more about how the business works day-to-day. It’s been great to see how everyone plays a role in keeping things running smoothly 24/7.

What’s one thing you’ve learned already that you didn’t expect?

What surprised me most was just how many different processes are involved in getting a single pallet from A to B. There’s so much more going on behind the scenes than I ever expected.

What’s your go-to snack for a long day at work?

I’d say my go to snack has got to be a packet of Maltesers straight out the fridge.

Head of Transport, Gary Thurlow said, “We’re excited to welcome Keir, our newest Apprentice, to the busy Transport team in Witham! Under the guidance of our Operations Manager Chris and myself, Keir has already made a strong impression with his energy and work ethic.

Over the next 12 months, Keir will gain hands-on experience across all areas of our transport planning, covering national and local operations, pallet networks, express consignments, and container transport. He’ll also shadow both a Transport Planner and an LGV driver and join me at customer meetings to understand the importance of client relationships.
Alongside his academic work, Keir will complete internal and external training, including key topics like drivers’ hours and working time regulations. We’re proud to support the next generation through our apprenticeship scheme and look forward to seeing Keir grow with Simarco International Ltd. Welcome aboard!”
