Celebrating 20 Years of Excellence: Rob Cooper’s Journey from Office Junior to Assistant Manager at Simarco
Please join us in congratulating our European Operations Assistant Manager, Rob Cooper on an incredible milestone, 20 years with Team Simarco! From starting out as an office junior to becoming a key part of our European export operations, Rob’s journey is a true testament to hard work, growth, and commitment.
Join us as we sit down with Rob to reflect on his career so far:
Can you take us back to your first day at Simarco?
My journey began in August 2005, when it was still IFB Ltd. I joined as an office junior in the courier department at just 18 years old and fresh out of college! I still remember how warm and welcoming everyone was, which made settling in so much easier. We were a small team; labelling and processing packages bound for destinations around the globe. It was my very first full-time job and a great place to start.
What initially drew you to logistics and Simarco?
Like many in logistics, I kind of fell into it! I spotted a job ad in a local newspaper and applied. I’ve always had a decent sense of geography, which I thought might come in handy. Plus, with my dad being a forklift driver and my grandad a wagon driver, perhaps logistics was always in my blood!
How has your role evolved over the last 20 years?
After three years in the courier team, I moved into the trailer department, which I’d always had my eye on. Since then, I’ve worked across multiple European export markets, from Spain to Scandinavia and built strong relationships with partners and hauliers and learnt the ins and outs of vehicle planning. Today, I help oversee European exports at Simarco Stoke, supporting the team, sharing my knowledge, and occasionally jumping back into ops when needed.
Your proudest achievement?
Honestly, it’s been a series of small wins that have added up, working my way up from office junior, becoming a homeowner, husband, and father… and yes, keeping my trusty 20-year-old blue Renault Clio running too!
Advice to someone starting in the industry today?
Work hard, stay open to advice, and be ready for opportunity, it’s an ever-changing industry, and there’s always room to grow for those who want it.
Any fond or funny memories?
Plenty of office laughs and great social events over the years! One standout memory is the 2009 fire at our site. Despite the devastation, the team came together, relocated, and had trailers loaded from a temporary yard that same Friday. The teamwork and commitment were nothing short of amazing.
20 years in three words?
Listen. Learn. Grow.
Congratulations on this incredible achievement, Rob! Thank you for everything you bring to the Simarco team.

Putting People First: Why Employee Wellness Matters in Warehousing
In the fast-paced world of warehousing and logistics, it’s easy to focus solely on deadlines, deliveries, and getting things from A to B. But behind every successful operation are people -Forklift Drivers, Warehouse Operatives, Pickers, Planners, and looking after their wellbeing has never been more important. Businesses across the UK logistics sector are now waking up to the real benefits of investing in employee wellness.
Ergonomics: Less Strain, More Gain
Warehousing is a physically demanding job. Repetitive lifting, standing for long hours, and awkward movements can take a toll. That’s why more UK-based firms are prioritising ergonomic workstations, proper lifting techniques, and equipment that’s designed with the worker in mind.
Mental Health: It’s Time to Talk
Let’s face it mental health affects everyone. Whether it’s stress from demanding shift patterns or the pressure of tight KPIs, warehouse environments can be mentally taxing. Fortunately, many logistics employers are making mental health support a core part of their wellness strategy.
From confidential counselling services and mental health first aiders to wellness workshops and mindfulness apps, the logistics sector is beginning to treat mental wellbeing with the same seriousness as physical safety. Talking about mental health is no longer a taboo.
Here at Simarco, we believe our people are our greatest strength. While we’re widely recognised for our reliable transport services and strict compliance with UK and European freight regulations, our real focus is on supporting our team. Staff wellbeing isn’t just something we talk about it’s something we prioritise every day. From ongoing training and development to open communication and genuine support, we’re committed to creating a workplace where our people feel valued, safe, and looked after.
Safety First (and always)
Safety has always been a non-negotiable in warehousing, but in 2025, we’re seeing a more holistic approach. It’s not just about ticking boxes on a risk assessment form. Modern safety protocols include real-time hazard reporting, regular refresher training, and the use of wearable tech that monitors fatigue and motion.
The HSE continues to advocate proactive safety management, and companies are stepping up, offering more hands-on training, encouraging open dialogue around near misses, and ensuring all workers (including temporary and agency staff) are fully briefed and supported.
Why It All Matters
Employee wellness isn’t just about doing the right thing, it’s smart business. Healthier, happier workers are more productive, less likely to take time off, and more inclined to stay with the company long-term. In an industry facing labour shortages and high turnover, that kind of loyalty is invaluable.
Wellness initiatives also help build a positive workplace culture. When people feel supported, physically, mentally, and emotionally they bring their best selves to work. That’s a win for workers, a win for managers, and ultimately, a win for customers.
Looking Ahead
As warehousing continues to evolve, especially with the rise of automation and digital processes, people remain at the heart of it all. Investing in ergonomics, mental health, and safety isn’t just a tick-box exercise, it’s the foundation of a sustainable, future-ready logistics operation.
As we often say here at Simarco, “It’s our people who make the difference.” And in 2025, we’re proud to see more businesses recognising just how true that really is.

Building the Future of Logistics: Workforce and Talent Development
In July 2025, the logistics industry stands at a critical crossroads. While demand for transportation, warehousing, and last-mile delivery continues to grow rapidly, companies across the globe are facing a major workforce challenge: labour shortages. From HGV Drivers to Warehouse Operatives and Planners, skilled talent is increasingly hard to find, and this gap is reshaping how the industry thinks about workforce development.
The shortages aren’t just temporary hiccups. They reflect long-term demographic shifts, an aging workforce, and changing expectations among younger job seekers. Today’s logistics workers are looking for more than just pay, they want career progression, flexibility, and meaningful roles that embrace technology and sustainability. In response, logistics companies are shifting gears and investing heavily in both people and automation to ensure the wheels of global supply chains keep turning.
Across the UK and beyond, many logistics firms are turning to robust training programmes and apprenticeships to build talent from within. Apprenticeship schemes, particularly those targeting young people, career changers, and underrepresented groups have become vital pipelines for new talent. These programmes offer hands-on experience combined with classroom learning, preparing individuals for everything from warehouse operations to transport planning and even managerial roles.
Here at Simarco, we continue to play a key role in this transformation. With a focus on developing people internally and building long-term career paths, we continue to invest in team development as part of our core strategy. We emphasize training not just as a necessity, but as a way to deliver better service to our customers while creating a more motivated, skilled, and future-ready workforce.
At the same time, automation is becoming an indispensable part of the logistics equation. With fewer hands available to perform tasks like sorting, packing, and scanning, companies are rapidly adopting technologies such as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), AI-powered route optimisation, and robotic picking systems. While automation helps fill the labour gap, it also creates new roles, like robotics technicians, automation analysts, and systems engineers that demand higher levels of digital literacy and technical know-how.
Interestingly, the rise of automation isn’t seen as a threat to jobs, it’s an opportunity to elevate them. Many logistics firms are now pairing automation with upskilling initiatives that empower existing staff to take on more advanced and rewarding responsibilities. Forklift drivers are being trained to operate automated systems, and warehouse staff are learning how to troubleshoot robotics software. In essence, humans and machines are learning to work side-by-side.
Recruitment practices are also evolving to attract the next generation of logistics talent. Gone are the days of dry job boards and lengthy paper applications. Today, companies are engaging young people on platforms they use, such as TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn – offering clearer career roadmaps, mentorship opportunities, and even sustainability-focused roles that appeal to environmentally conscious candidates. Flexible hours, mental health support, and onsite wellness benefits are also becoming standard offerings to retain staff in a highly competitive market.
As logistics moves into a more tech-driven future, the industry’s workforce is adapting in stride. What we’re seeing in 2025 is not just a response to a staffing crisis, but a long-overdue modernisation of how logistics companies attract, train, and retain people. The emphasis is no longer solely on filling vacancies, but on building a sustainable, skilled, and tech-savvy workforce capable of navigating the complex demands of global trade.
Ultimately, logistics in 2025 is being shaped by two powerful forces: human potential and technological innovation. By investing in both, the industry is not only solving today’s labour shortages, it’s laying the foundation for a smarter, more resilient supply chain for years to come.

How to Maximise Warehouse Space Without Expanding
Tips to help you do more with the space you already have
If your warehouse is starting to feel a little too cramped, you’re not alone. As orders increase and inventory grows, it’s tempting to think the only solution is to expand or move to a bigger facility. But the good news? You might not need more square footage – you might just need to use your existing space more effectively.
At Simarco, we understand that not one size fits all, and it’s important to constantly review your warehousing procedures to gain fluidity. We’ve found that taking a tailored approach to warehouse management has made a significant difference across our operations.
Here are some practical tips, many of which we’ve implemented ourselves, to help you maximise warehouse space without having to build or rent more space:
1. Go Vertical
If you’re only thinking in terms of floor space, you’re missing out. Use the full height of your warehouse by installing taller racking systems or mezzanine floors. Stacking vertically (safely, of course!) can double or even triple your storage capacity.
Tip: Check the ceiling height and local safety regulations before you start stacking to the skies!
2. Reorganise your Layout
Sometimes, the way things are laid out just isn’t efficient. Review your current warehouse layout to see if aisles are wider than they need to be or if frequently accessed items are too far away.
Ask yourself:
- Are high-turnover products easy to reach?
- Are there ‘dead zones’ where nothing useful is stored?
Small layout changes can make a big difference. At Simarco, we constantly review our plans of action to identify what needs changing and this varies across sites. For example, we recently restructured our Witham site, adding additional racking to improve vertical storage capacity along with product presentation to ensure the faster moving products are located in the most efficient location which improves picking productivity.
In contrast, we removed racking in our Stoke site to create more open floor space, as this location handles a different mix of freight and requires more flexibility beyond cross-docking.
Using CAD tools or warehouse layout software can also aid you in optimising your warehouse space.
3. Use the Right Racking Systems
Not all racking is created equally. Depending on your inventory type, you might benefit from alternatives like:
- Push-back racks
- Pallet flow racks
- Cantilever racks for longer items like pipes or lumber
We’ve explored various racking systems across our network to ensure that the storage solution fits the stock profile. This approach has allowed us to free up space and increase operational efficiency without needing to physically expand.
4. Implement Inventory Management Systems
Too much stock or the wrong stock can clog up your warehouse fast. ABC analysis and inventory management software helps you:
- Track what’s really moving
- Avoid overstocking slow-selling items
- Plan smarter restocks
Implementing Just-in-Time (JIT) or lean inventory practices gives you enhanced control meaning less waste and more space.
5. Reduce Aisle Width (if possible)
Wide aisles feel nice but eat up space. If you use smaller forklifts or manual picking carts, you might be able to reduce aisle width and gain storage space. Use flow racks (FIFO or LIFO) for fast moving products – just make sure it’s still safe and easy to manoeuvre.
6. Use Mobile Shelving Units
Mobile shelving units or racks on tracks can be moved around as needed. They’re great for seasonal items or stock that doesn’t require constant access, allowing you to compact storage when it’s not in use.
7. Create a Cross-Docking Area
Instead of storing everything, you could streamline operations by setting up a cross-docking area. This is where incoming goods are immediately sorted and shipped out. This reduces the need to store excess inventory and keeps your floor space clearer.
At Simarco, cross-docking plays an important role in some of our locations, helping us keep stock moving and floor space clear, especially in high-turnover environments.
8. Adopt Warehousing Automation
For compact and efficient storage use automated and retrieval systems (AS/RS) or vertical lift modules (VLMS) to help increase storage efficiency, improve inventory accuracy (which minimises mis-picks) and speeds up order fulfilment.
Using a Warehouse Management System (WMS) helps to track your inventory locations and aids in optimising your storage space.
9. Audits
Conduct regular space utilisation audits to maintain efficiency, control costs, and support growth. We run ongoing audits across Simarco sites to spot opportunities for improvement, whether it’s reconfiguration, technology updates, or smarter stock planning.
10. Keep it Clean and Tidy
It might sound simple, but regular cleaning and decluttering often reveal space you didn’t know you had. Get rid of obsolete stock, broken pallets, or unused equipment.
A tidy warehouse is a more efficient warehouse.
Final Thoughts…
Maximising warehouse space doesn’t always require a bigger building; it just takes a smarter approach. At Simarco, our experience has taught us that consistent review, site-specific planning, and the right systems can dramatically enhance your use of space.
Whether you’re managing a high-turnover cross-docking hub like Stoke, or a bulk-storage heavy site like Witham, the key is adaptability. By going vertical, rethinking your layout, and embracing better inventory practices, you can boost your capacity and productivity without ever adding a square foot.

Logistics Sector Faces Rising Costs and Disrupted Supply Chains Amid Global Tensions
The logistics industry is grappling with escalating costs, disrupted supply chains, and shifting demand patterns, as geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions intensify worldwide.
Recent conflicts, notably between Israel and Iran, have significantly impacted global trade routes. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil shipments, faces potential threats, leading to increased shipping rates and insurance premiums. Tanker bookings have slowed, and freight costs have surged, with some routes experiencing over 20% increases.
In the Red Sea, the Houthi movement’s attacks on vessels have prompted major shipping companies to suspend operations in the region. This has led to a diversion of ships around the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in longer transit times, higher fuel consumption, and increased emissions.
These disruptions have reverberated across various sectors. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies are concerned about rising input costs due to higher oil prices, which could dampen consumer demand. Exporters, particularly in India, anticipate a 15-20% increase in logistics costs, potentially affecting their competitiveness in global markets.
In response, businesses are adopting strategies such as diversifying suppliers and trade routes, investing in technology for better supply chain visibility, and exploring alternative transportation modes to mitigate risks.
Here at Simarco, we’ve observed an increase in nearshoring activity from our customers, particularly within the EU. This trend has led to growing demand for our daily import services from across Europe. These imports are seamlessly integrated into our warehousing and transport operations, enabling an efficient and fully trackable supply chain solution.
As geopolitical uncertainties continue to shape the global landscape, the logistics sector faces the dual challenge of managing increased operational costs while striving to maintain efficient and resilient supply chains.
Trevor Scott, Managing Director, said “In these situations all parties must be realistic about the fixed costs asset-led logistics businesses have to mitigate. There are always more efficient ways of operating but to continue to provide excellent service, communication and on time deliveries, cost cutting should not be the standalone strategy”.

Richard Jackson: 30 Years of Growth, Leadership, and Passion
Richard’s journey began in 1995, though technically it wasn’t with Simarco at the time, it was with IFB, which became part of Simarco through acquisition in 2014. Starting as an Export Clerk covering Germany, Spain, and Scandinavia, Richard steadily grew through the ranks, proving time and again that curiosity, dedication, and leadership go a long way.
Today, Richard oversees our European Operation in Stoke and plays a vital role in developing our European Partner network. On September 4th, 2025, he’ll mark an incredible 30 years with us.
So, what’s kept him going all this time?
“The job, and the people I work with,” Richard shares simply. He’s always enjoyed the dynamism of the logistics industry and thrives on the challenges each day brings. “I love leading a team and being part of a business that is always evolving. There’s always something new to learn, a new challenge to overcome.”
Over the years, Richard has played a pivotal role in expanding our services across Europe and building meaningful, lasting partnerships. He takes the most pride in seeing his team succeed: “Putting together a successful team and watching them grow in their careers has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.”
His advice to newcomers?
“Take an interest in all areas of the business, ask lots of questions, and give it 100% every day.”
And his journey in a quote?
“I have and continue to work with dedicated and fantastic people. The boy did okay 😊”
Karen Mellor: 35 Years of Loyalty, Leadership and Heart
Karen’s story is the kind you don’t hear often. What started as a temporary helping hand in the accounts department turned into a 35-year career filled with growth, change, and a genuine love for the people she works with.
Today, Karen is our Payroll Manager, overseeing the Group payroll while being an integral part of the HR Team. She’s also a proud member of our Mind Matters Group, helping champion mental health and wellbeing within the business.
Karen has worn many hats over the years, from managing the Stoke accounts and admin department to playing a key role in major office moves, including the heroic weekend relocation after a serious fire. Her ability to take on challenges with positivity and care has made her a cornerstone of the Simarco family.
Reflecting on her journey, Karen says, “Simarco have made my working life an absolute pleasure. Working for a good company that genuinely cares is worth a lot.”
She’s also been part of some truly memorable moments, including an unforgettable charity event in London with the Stoke management team.
Karen’s advice for those just starting out:
“Simarco is always growing and improving. If you work hard and grow with us, the opportunities will come.”
As we celebrate Richard and Karen, we do more than honour the years, they represent the spirit of Simarco: hard-working, people-first, and always moving forward. Here’s to the journeys behind us, the milestones ahead, and the incredible team members who make it all possible.

Team Simarco Volunteers with Trust Links Garden Project at Cressing Temple – Supporting Community Mental Health Through Gardening
A fantastic team of volunteers from Team Simarco spent the day at the Trust Links Garden Project at Cressing Temple, near Witham, lending their support to the charity and its members through a range of gardening tasks. 🌳
We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the sun was shining from start to finish! Thankfully, the wonderful charity members kept us cool and hydrated as we got to work planting bedding and plants, tidying old planters and even setting up a gazebo for some much-needed shade.
The highlight of the day was chatting with the charities members and hearing their inspiring stories. It gave us a real appreciation for the amazing work Trust Links does – creating safe, inclusive, and supportive green spaces where adults can connect, grow, and thrive, both mentally and physically. 🌿💚
Some of our team left brimming with ideas and a few are even planning to make their own planters from recycled pallets! ♻️🪵
A big thank you to Trust Links – Community Mental Health for having us, we’re already looking forward to the next one!
